openEuler Community Operations Monthly Bulletin - July 2022
openEuler, as one of the open source projects of OpenAtom Foundation, participated in the 2022 Open Atom Global Open Source Summit held this month. On the openEuler session, we demonstrated openEuler's progress in ecosystem development, technical innovation, and industry best practices. In addition, the openEuler community officially announced its first batch expert consultants. We hope that with the support of our community contributors and expert consultants, we can drive the future development of openEuler.
openEuler session on OpenAtom Summit, July 27 12 industry leaders from enterprises, research facilities, and media corporations joined the openEuler session to share their open source insights and expectations.
Ni Guangnan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, commented that the openEuler community demonstrates fruitful industry collaboration, international cooperation, and open source innovation. According to him, Chinese enterprises are actively contributing to open source to thrive in computing technologies and industry development. As a new-born community, openEuler has shown impressive technical capabilities, contributor scale, and operations performance. It is very promising and will soon grow to be one of the most popular open source OS communities around the world.
Core members of openEuler, such as Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, e-Cloud, Unitech Software, Kylinsec, State Grid, iSoftStone, Intel, Hundsun Electronics, Hoperun Information Technology, and TurboLinux, shared their technological innovation and best industry practices on the openEuler session.
At the annual open source contribution star award ceremony, the community presented awards to 12 excellent contributors over the past 12 months, in honour of developers and advocates who have made outstanding contributions to code, documentation, and community activities.
Community Highlights in July
By July 31, the number of openEuler community users has reached
more than 10,000 developers have raised issues and submitted PRs in the community. Up to date, a total of
37,700+ issues and
67,000+ PRs have been generated.

The Secretariat Office drafted the openEuler Ecological Innovation Center Authorization Management Method, which starts implementation after it was reviewed and approved by the Council.
The Secretariat Office took the lead in setting up the openEuler Authorization Process and Management Regulations for Talent Assessment Organizations, which was reviewed and approved by the Council.

Up to now, more than 360 enterprise partners have joined the community, working with openEuler to develop more digital infrastructure software and hardware, and boost the application ecosystem.
The First Batch of Community Consultants
The community has invited leading experts and scholars in academia, media, and business to provide guidance and suggestions on future directions and strategies. Among the first batch of expert consultants appointed were Lu Shouqun, Honorary Chairman of China Open Source Software Alliance, Ni Guangnan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Zhou Minghui, Professor of Computer Science at Peking University, and Huo Taiwen, founder of InfoQ China. The appointment ceremony was completed at the OpenAtom Open Source Global Summit on July 27.
openEuler SIG Meetings
To facilitate SIG members' participation, the community website demonstrates the scheduled SIG meetings on the official website. SIG meetings are open to all members, so you can share your ideas and get feedback from others. For those who missed the meeting, minutes are provided as well.
openEuler Porting Guide
When porting to openEuler, problems are sometimes inevitable. Hardware and software compatibility, system environment restoration, and system performance needs are frequent concerns of our partners.
For quicker porting and better performance, the community drafted the openEuler Porting Guide (English version coming soon). This guide provides tools for compatibility evaluation, analysis, and testing, as well as porting cases of major applications.
openEuler Resource Utilization Improvement
Several studies indicate that DC clusters use less than 20% of their CPUs, wasting many resources. To address this issue, Cloud Native SIG, High Performance Network SIG, Kernel SIG, OpenStack SIG, and Virt SIG have teamed up to discuss technologies for improving DC resource utilization. If you are interested, search for the preceding SIGs in openEuler SIG List and join them.
StratoVirt vNIC Implementation
Currently, the StratoVirt supports three types of vNICs: Virtio-net, Vhost-net, and Vhost-user-net. Each type has its own pros and cons. You can select any type based on different needs.

Vhost-net: High performance needs and low CPU resources
Vhost-user-net: High performance needs and high CPU resources
LibcarePlus User-mode Hot Patch
At the beginning of July, the openEuler community cooperated with the e-Cloud infrastructure technical team to build the LibcarePlus hot patch function that fully supports the AArch 64 and x86 platforms. It can be used to fix CVE vulnerabilities or emergency bugs while at the same time application services still run perfectly. As a key technology of the openEuler community, LibcarePlus user-mode hot patch has always been a hot topic since its release.
Currently, LibcarePlus has been open-sourced in the openEuler community. The SIG team will share their tech details and feature updates in the future.
openEuler Mini Courses Jointly Developed by the G11N SIG and Kernel SIG
For a better understanding of the openEuler OS, the G11N and Kernel SIGs are developing a series of mini courses to explain kernel-related concepts. For developers, community infrastructure has always been of interest and concern. To improve user experience, we made the following updates.
openEuler Official Website
- To make the official website clearer and more concise, we redesigned the web content and layout. The environment experience, porting zone, and case center are preferentially displayed.
Case Center (English version coming soon): More than 10 user cases are added, covering finance, carrier, energy, logistics, and many more sectors.
Enabled global CDN acceleration to improve access performance outside China.
Optimized the web search, and fixed search errors and search hit failures.
Three mirror sites in Europe are added (France, Austria, and Belgium) so that European users can download and use the mirror sites for better experience. For details, see Mirrors.
Community Engineering Capability
The automatic pipeline service for the access control of the openEuler source code repository has been rolled out. Developers can refer to the guide to configure the access control of the code repository.
The VM environment is supported.

To help community developers share code while protecting privacy, the infrastructure team launched the code sharing service based on the open-source project PrivateBin. The project supports various formats such as text, Markdown, and source code, and allows password protection, private links, maximum retention period, email sending, dynamic QR code, and one-piece copy.
On July 14, the openEuler community operations team organized the first roast event: openEuler Talk. We are honored to invite TC members Xiong Wei and Cao Zhi as the main roasters, attracting more than 40 maintainers to participate in the discussion.
Developers reported 13 issues during the event, covering documents, blogs, new developer experience, and community maintainer experience.
On July 26, the openEuler operations team held a live broadcast centering on the theme of how college students can contribute to the openEuler community. The live attracted 200+ online audiences, among which 40+ are college students. They directly communicated with openEuler experts. The community also launched two live technical courses: Gazella user-mode protocol stack and memory tiering expansion etmem.
How College Students Can Contribute to the openEuler Community
From July 30 to 31, the Ind.Summit 2022 was successfully held online. At the main forum of the summit, Chen Chuanjie, a technical expert of openEuler, shared openEuler's progress in the embedded OS field and communicated with more than 20,000 online developers.
The Open Source Summer event has entered the project development phase. Online live training is provided for developers to finish their tasks well. 76 selected students will contribute to the openEuler community projects during this summer vacation.
The open source internship for college students is still open. Currently, 33 students have signed contracts for internship in the openEuler community, completed 99 tasks, submitted 291 PRs, and contributed to more than 40 SIGs in the community.
openEuler track registration is now open for the Kunpeng Application Innovation Contest. The contest includes regional and final phases. Reward will be presented for excellent participants at each phase. Developers can set up teams by themselves to complete track tasks.
